Giovanni Sartori was born in Florence, Italy in
1924 and died in his country in 2014. He was a researcher in political science
specifically in the field of comparative politics.
He studied at the University of Florence where
he graduated in Social Sciences, was the driving force behind the creation of
the first Faculty of Political Science in Italy, also founded the "Rivista
Italiana di Scienza Politica" in 1971 and taught at the universities of
Florence, Columbia and Stanford.
Sartori was awarded various prizes and honors
such as the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences in 2005, the Karl
Deutsch Award in 2009 and various honors from Mexican and Argentine
universities.
Among his contributions to Political Science,
the democratic theory of Political Party Systems and the various contributions
he has made to conceptualize and develop important methods for the field of
study are particularly noteworthy. His main works are "What is
Democracy", "Elements of Political Theory" and "The Race to
Nowhere".
I chose Sartori because I believe that he was a
very relevant contribution to the development of Political Science, and not
only in his country, but he reached many places in the world with his ideas and
contributions. In addition, he was an innovator, and although he died recently,
I feel that his legacy will be remembered for a long time to come thanks to his
studies and participation in the field of Comparative Politics.
